The Primacy of Drawing Book Launch and Talk with Deanna Petherbridge

October 21, 2010 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

October 21, 2010
7 – 9 pm

LACE is proud to host a Book Launch event for The Primacy of Drawing – History and Theories of Practice (Released by Yale University Press in 2010 with support by The Metabolic Studio) by the well-known British artist and writer Deanna Petherbridge at LACE on Thursday October 21, 2010 7-9:00pm (limited free parking, first come first served).

Please join us for the last chance to meet Deanna Petherbridge in person at the final date in the Southern California leg of her US book tour. The evening includes a brief introduction by artist Lauren Bon of The Metabolic Studio and host of the book tour, followed by a presentation by Petherbridge. Her presentation titled “The Primacy of Drawing” explores key ideas in her comprehensive 500+ page book through revealing juxtapositions of historical and contemporary artworks. Artists, art historians and the art-interested public won’t want to miss this opportunity to hear Petherbridge analyze and propose ways to approach artists’ drawings — from Rubens, Rembrandt and Picasso to Bourgeouis, Trockel and many less-familiar artists — to explore the ideas that inform their work.

In her book, Petherbridge looks at a wide range of drawings in various media. She confirms a long historical commitment to the importance of sketching in generating ideas and problem solving, and traces the importance of drawing in the training of artists until well into the twentieth century. It is the first book of its kind to address emergent ways of drawing within a richly illustrated trans-historical context.  The book is richly illustrated with artists such da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Seurat, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse. This book is written to appeal to artists, art historians, students, educators, as well as a general audience.

The Primacy of Drawing book launch is part of the LACE SALON SERIES, which hosts events led by artists from all disciplines to further dialogue and participation between and among artists and audiences. The Series reflects LACE’s abiding interest in the creative “process” as much as the “product” and our mission to champion and challenge the art of our time by fostering artists who innovate, experiment, explore, and risk.
