ReVISIONS of LA with Jay Erker, Erin Payne, and Jason Ramos

April 1, 2012 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

ASAP @ LACE

LACE is located in the heart of Hollywood, an ideal place to observe and contemplate the collision of Los Angeles — its intricate networks hum with activity as resources are transferred and spaces are reconstructed through use or development. ASAP’s 2011 Re-Visions of LA drawing workshops will build conversations around how our urban environments are constructed and what that means to our every day lives. Each month a new group of artists will spend an afternoon at LACE providing free drawing classes.

All levels and ages are welcome as we talk about Hollywood while drawing our surroundings.

All workshops are free, and all materials will be supplied.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Jay Erker is a Los Angeles-based artist and curator whose multi-media works involve the concepts of celebrity, pop culture, identity and desire. She and her husband, painter John Mills, direct the artist-run space, Weekend, in Los Feliz/Hollywood. Jay Erker received her masters degree in film at California Institute of the Arts in 2001 and has been included in group shows in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. She presented her work at Weekend in December 2011 and her work currently can be seen in the exhibition I’ll Be Your Mirror, curated by Daniel McGrath and opening March 17th to April 15th at Monte Vista, an artist-run space located in Highland Park. Erin Payne is a native Southern Californian. She makes paintings and photographs that play with variations in narrative that occur when objects are literally inserted into environments. Her work examines the role of artifice in art and the history of representing humans in nature. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and recently her MFA in Art from Claremont Graduate University in 2011. She was featured in the 2011 MFA edition of New American Paintings as the “Jurors Pick” by Randi Hopkins, Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. In 2012 she won the “Annual Reader’s Choice Prize” from New American Paintings. Recent exhibitions have included BOOM, Realm of Realism at LA Mart, Friday Night Lights & Sunday Afternoons at Summercamp Project Project, and In a Landscape Where Nothing Officially Exists through Unspace Ground at CAA Los Angeles. She will be showing her work at Autonomy Gallery this October. For further information please visit erinpayneart.com

Jason Ramos is an artist, curator, and teacher. He maintains his painting practice at RAID Projects, where he serves as proprietor and Director. He is also the Assistant Curator of the Torrance Art Museum and is part of ARTRA Curatorial. He has shown in group exhibitions nationally and internationally and was formerly represented by co-operative gallery initiative Durden and Ray. He earned his MFA in Painting from Cal State Fullerton in 2007, and will be showing new work at Autonomie in downtown LA this April. More at jasonramos.com
